Are you making progress towards your goals?

Are you making progress towards your goals?

We are almost half way through another year. Can you honestly say that it’s looking better than last year? If you compare where you are now to where you were three years ago, would you say that you’re getting ahead?

Making progress is my obsession. I am constantly doing the comparisons with last week, last month, and last year. I like the feeling of getting better, making improvements, getting things done.

I have a simple methodology for making progress. I look at the four keys areas of my life. My health, my relationships, my career and my finances and ask myself which of these needs the most attention? I then set myself a 90 day goal for making progress, put together a plan and then execute on that plan. It’s really that simple!

However, I also understand that many people have the best of intentions, but still lose their way and fail to reach their goals. So here are 3 simple tips that will give you a much better chance at success.

1. You need to answer this question as a resounding YES! – “Can I do it?” If the answer is NO, you are beaten before you begin. Make your goal smaller, something that stretches you, but doesn’t overwhelm you.

2. Take small steps. When climbing a mountain, you don’t focus on the peak; you focus on the next ridge and when it gets tough, the next step, knowing that if you keep taking each small step you must eventually reach the summit.

3. Be clear on the benefits. If you are not sure of how achieving that goal is going to pay off or what the reward is going to be, you probably won’t stick at it when it becomes difficult. Make sure that the reason “WHY” is a really strong one so that you are sure to stick at it when you want to give up.
